English practical writing is an important writing format for senior high school students to grasp. However, the situation of writing is out of expectation. Nowadays, a variety of problems in writing occurs. Students ignore the importance of writing, and schools and teachers spend less time in teaching students how to write.Generally speaking, most of English teachers presently adopt the product approach to teach students writing. However, to some extent, this teaching approach is traditional and it has obvious weakness. Thus, a new approach of teaching writing is preferred among teachers. The process genre approach mainly focuses on the writing process and application of proper genre. It is beneficial for students in generating and organizing ideas to reach writing purpose. The process genre approach is explored and applied to teaching.The research aims at solving the following questions: 1) Can the process genre approach improve students' writing ability both in content and structure or not? 2) In improving students' English writing abilities, is the process genre approach more effective than the product approach in practical writing teaching? 3) Can the process genre approach help the students develop a better understanding of English practical writing?The study is carried out in Class five and class six at No. 3 High School in Lin He city, from September to December of 2015, and it lasts about three months altogether. The number of students from Class five and Class six is 112. These two classes are considered as participants who take part in this experiment. In the process of experiment, they all receive the same pre-test, post-test writing test and post questionnaire. Six students are randomly chosen in EC to do the interview to survey the effect of PGA. Students of Class five are taught in the process genre approach, while students of Class six are taught in traditional teaching method. Instruments are used in this experiment including tests, questionnaires, and interview. All the experimental data is analyzed by SPSS16.0.The results of experiment are compared and analyzed scientifically. It shows that the process genre approach not only takes the purpose of writing into consideration but also gives particular attention to content and structure of texts. Besides, it also shows the writing ability of students in class five who are taught in the process genre approach has been improved than before. It has been found very effective to improve the integrative ability in practical writing. The process genre approach has more advantages than the traditional approaches.
