Code-switching refers to "the phenomenon of language varieties when using two or more languages to communicate", which is common in English classes in high schools. This research recorded and analyzed teachers' utterance in English classes to study teachers' and students' attitudes to code-switching, and then study the effects of code-switching through two experiments. The research also concludes the functions of code-switching in English classes. The study aims to provide some suggestions for teachers in high school and further studies on code-switching in English classes.The research adopted classroom observation, recording, questionnaire, and experiments ways to study code-switching in English classes of high school quantitatively and qualitatively. All the data are collected from Baoji Jintai High School, Shaanxi Province. The research aims to study the following questions:(1) What are the attitudes of students and teachers to code-switching in English classes? The attitudes contain their attitudes to effects, frequency and amount.(2) What is the frequency of using code-switching in class? Are there any differences of used code-switching between different types of class or different grades?(3) What are the functions of code-switching in English classes?(4) What are the effects of code-switching in English classes?Code-switching can be regarded as a teaching strategy which can influence classroom management, interpersonal relationship and communication. According to the findings of this research, Most teachers and students hold positive attitudes to code-switching and they consider code-switching is helpful in teaching and learning English. Teachers use code-switching based on different teaching tasks and purposes. However, teachers' code-switching is influenced by many social variables such as teachers' teaching years, education background, students' language proficiency and so on. More social variables can be taken account in future studies on code-switching in English classes.
