A Study Of Transition Services For Students With Disabilities From Special Educational Schools In Shanghai

There are many transition periods in our whole life.Due to the impairments,when dealing with the environmental,physical and mental changes,the students with disabilities have to suffer lots of difficulties during the transition period.Based on the literature review,semi-structure interview guides are made for the current study.In this study,the current situation of transition services for individuals with disabilities from special educational school in Shanghai are explored through the perspectives of the school leaders,teachers and parents.In conclusion,the transition services for disabled individuals from exceptional schools in Shanghai are still in embryo.The specific results are as the following:(1)In terms of working forms,there are two working forms for special educational schools to provide transition services,namely,individualized and non-individualized forms.As to the specific service,all the interviewed schools pay much attention to service on independent living skills and preparation for further education.In addition,there are also several dilemmas confronted by the schools when conducting transition programs,for example,a lack of policies.And Few schools have made ITPs for the disabled students.(2)Teachers argue that the most important service that should be offered to students with disabilities is that about independent living skills.When asked how they prepared for the transition program,the teachers reported mostly about the preparations on their instruction skills and information collection.As to the cooperation among teachers,they mainly worked with each other on their own subjects in order to help students achieve the goals.Teachers argue that there are abundant materials for the transition programs,but several teachers reported a lack of time as well.According to the teachers,there is good program coherence,and all the school leaders attach great importance to the transition programs.(3)In the transition process,parents are in great need of parenting skills,respite service,and so on.Their knowledge about the transition services are mainly about instruction.What's more,parents also have done something for their children,for instance,collecting information and conduct several specific interventions.However,Parents suffer lots of difficulties as well,such as lacking parenting experiences,large caring pressure,and so on.
