Reading capacity plays an important role in four basic language skills,which directly effect learners' overall foreign language proficiency.Therefore,more and more researchers and front-line teachers as well as language learners are paying more attention to how to improve the English reading proficiency.A lot of researchers find that strategy use in reading has influences on the English reading proficiency.In this way,the researches about concrete learning strategies have been attached great importance to.Metacognitive strategies,as an important part of learning strategies,play an irreplaceable role in English learning,especially in English reading,listening and writing.In order to explore the effect of metacognitive strategies use on high school students' English reading proficiency,the author conducts a ten-week training of metacognitive strategies and a ten-week training of normal reading strategies with 80 high school students as participants.To have a clear idea of the effect of training,three research questions are put forward on the basis of previous studies.1.How is the overall situation of high school students' application awareness of metacognitive strategies in English reading?2.Can the training of metacognitive strategies effectively enhance high school students' application awareness of metacognitive strategies in English reading?3.Can the training of metacognitive strategies help the students improve their English reading proficiency?Based on these three research questions,the author adopts questionnaire survey,reading comprehension tests and retrospective interviews to collect data.All data are analyzed by SPSS 20.0.According to results of data analyses,conclusions can be drawn as follows.First of all,the overall proficiency of high school students' metacognitive strategies use is generally at a lower level.In addition,the training of metacognitive strategies effectively enhances the metacognitive strategies application awareness of high schoolstudents in English reading.Finally,metacognitive strategies training also improves high school students' English reading proficiency.In the light of these findings,the author suggests that metacognitive strategies training should be infiltrated into daily reading teaching.
