As a common linguistic phenomenon,code-switching has attracted wide attention.Recently,scholars at home and abroad have paid attention to code-switching in English as a foreign language(EFL)classroom.It is still a controversial question on whether code-switching should exist in EFL classroom.Many Scholars attempt to analyze code-switching from various perspectives.The research mainly focuses on teachers' code-switching in senior high school English classroom under the perspective of Vershueren's adaptation theory so as to give suggestions to the use of teachers' code-switching.Three questions are proposed in the present study:(1)What types of code-switching do teachers use in senior high school English classroom?(2)What are the functions of teachers' code-switching in senior high school English classroom?(3)What are the reasons for teachers' code-switching from the perspective of adaptation theory?The present study is conducted in Shenyang No.2 Senior High School,where four English teachers are selected as the subjects.For the sake of the research purpose,the research provides a detailed analysis in the form of classroom observation and interviews with the participants.In addition,the author transcribes eight periods of four teachers which provide some basic information for analysis.The research findings show that these four teachers adopt intra-sentential code-switching,inter-sentential code-switching and tag code-switching.Among them,intra-sentential code-switching accounts for the largest proportion,followed by tagcode-switching and inter-sentential code-switching.Students' language proficiency and different lesson types influence the amount and types of teachers' code-switching.Teachers' code-switching could be categorized into the following functions:explaining language points,managing classroom,organizing activities,checking comprehension,making generation,creating humorous environment,reiteration and adapting to students' language proficiency.Besides,teachers' code-switching is an adaptation process in English classroom.It is to adapt to teachers' roles,classroom environment and psychological motivations of teachers in order to realize teaching goals.The author hopes the thesis will be helpful for senior high school English teaching and provide useful suggestions for future research.
