Grammar plays a significant role in English teaching in senior high school,thus it has gained much attention.However,many English teachers feel confused that their students'grammar learning has not improved although both teachers and students spend a large amount of energy.Students also lose interest in the dull grammar teaching.This thesis aims at applying scaffolding teaching approach to English grammar teaching in order to promote students' grammatical competence.Scaffolding teaching approach is based on constructivism and the theory of the zone of proximal development(ZPD).The scaffolding teaching approach stresses the teachers makes use of some interesting scaffolds skillfully to guide students to explore grammar rules independently step by step and then they check their answers in the group discussion.Finally,students obtain the correct cognition for the knowledge with the help of teachers.In this process,the teachers can arouse students' interest by setting up scaffolds,changing the tedious atmosphere.Meanwhile,students are given more chances to study independently so as to obtain the state of changing the roles in class.90 students in one senior high school from Liao ning province,Ying Kou city take part in this research.45 students are from the experimental class and the other 45 students are from the control class.Students' overall language proficiency and grammar level in both the classes has no significant difference before the experiment.Traditional teaching method and scaffolding teaching approach are used in the control class and the experimental class respectively.The experiment lasts for 16 weeks.In the process of the experiment,questionnaire,interview and pre-test and post-test are used as instruments to get the data.The data collected from the experiment are analyzed by SPSS.The thesis intends to answer the three questions:1.In what ways can scaffolding teaching approach have an influence on the students'grammar learning?2.In what ways can scaffolding teaching approach have an influence on the students'interest and confidence in English grammar learning?3.In what ways can scaffolding teaching approach have an influence on the students'autonomous learning ability in English grammar learning?The results show that compared with control class,the grammar achievement of the students from experimental class is higher than before with the help of the new teaching approach.Meanwhile,scaffolding teaching approach stimulates students' interests in learning grammar,enhances the students'confidence,cultivates students' autonomous learning ability.Therefore,scaffolding teaching approach is an effective teaching method in grammar teaching in senior high school.
