In our country,the classroom has become the primary place for students English learning and practicing due to the lim itation of the language environment.Especially,English class is basically taught in Chines e in the senior high school of the rem ote province.Moreover,it is rare that students take the initia tive to p articipate in the verbal interaction with the English teach er.The opportunities for students learning English and practicing oral English are g reatly reduced,and the atmosphere o f English class is dull.In the process of turn taking of teachers and students,students' turn silence frequently occurs in E nglish classroom of the se nior high school.It seriously affected the verbal comm unication of teachers and students.Teachers ask questions and answer them themselves.The dum b English gradually form ed.Therefore,this investigation takes the students' turn silence as the object of the study to explore the influencing factors from the perspective of students themselves.This investigation employed the method of classroom observation,questionnaire and interview to answer thre e questions: to investigate the current situation o f students' turn silence in English classroom of senior high school,to find out the students' factors for students ' turn silence in English class and to analyze the m ain students' factors of students' turn silence.This research was conducted in Mudanjiang No.3 senior high school of Heilongjiang pr ovince,and the res earch lasts for one semester.Major findings of the research are as follows:1.Students' turn silence commonly exists in English class of Mudanjiang No.3 senior high school.Students' verbal involvement is rare during the process of turn taking with the teacher in English class.Some students were silent for the most of the time in English class.2.This investigation found that in addition to the infl uencing of students' instrument motivation,the students' English styles and the exis ting English level of students are two factors that cannot be ignored in the infl uencing of students' turn silence.Besides,the influences of stude nts' anxiety and students' confidence for students' turn silence are not obvious in this investigation.3.It can be concluded that the main students' factor leading to students' turn silence is that the students' English level is poor.The main performance is lacking in the knowledge of vocabulary and grammar.Also,the second influencing factor is the English learning motivation of students.Most students learn English to cope with the examination.In summary,this investigation can provide the reference materials for the correct understanding of students' turn silence,so that English teacher s can stim ulate the enthusiasm of students in English accord ing to the dif ferent students' influencing factors.And it can help to im prove the atmosphere of senior high school English teaching so as to enhance the quality of English education,especially in the rem ote province.
