Vocabulary learning is a core element in learning English and is the essential premise of developing language skills.Due to the immature ability of abstract thinking of primary school children, only a few basic grammatical rules can be taught, which makes vocabulary teaching crucial in primary school English courses.Meanwhile, textbook as the main medium for vocabulary learning, which has been in the core status of leaning process, and it is also the major linguistic input source, thus becoming the crucial vocabulary input source. The textbook vocabularies should conform to the rule of cognitive psychology for primary school students, which are learned by students from the most usual ones to complex and unusual ones. The most usual ones signify the high-frequency words in native English corpus, otherwise complex and unusual ones signify the low-frequency words in the corpus. After the investigation,it seems that although many specialists are going all out to compile the primary Oxford English(Shanghai Edition),however, there still exist some drawbacks in Oxford English.Vocabulary distribution in some degree doesn?t pay attention to the word frequency. There are some low-frequency words appearing too early for students to learn. As the only authorized source of acquiring vocabulary in Shanghai, the vocabulary pattern gives a lot of burden on pupils? memory. This study sets its goal to investigate the Shanghai area?s primary school textbooks? vocabulary distribution pattern based on the vocabulary frequency from grade one to grade five, with the help of BNC and COCA corpus. With the help of corpus, the textbooks vocabularies are discussed mainly from the following aspects: 1)the vocabulary distribution in overall and specific textbooks from the aspect of vocabulary frequency;2)the low-frequency vocabularies? proportion and the substitution of the low-frequency vocabularies;3)the recurrence situation of the high-frequency words;4)the cultural different vocabulary lists based on word frequency.Given the previous research, the thesis proposes the following suggestions: 1)teachers and students should pay much attention to those high-frequency words;2)teachers may create culturally different vocabulary lists that are suitable for students and can meet their studying needs.
