With the development of multimedia,the traditional mono-discourse information can not make people's daily communication fluent.The mind and thoughts of people are changed by the multimodal discourse which combined text,sound,image,and color.Mono-modal education discourse is not fit for students' development,textbooks take vital function in education discourse,so the multimodal discourse research of textbook is helpful not only for teachers but also for the multiliteracy development of students.The research theory is adopted from Kress & van Leeuwen's Visual Grammar and Royce's inter-semiotic complementary theory,which is developed from Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics.The Visual Grammar is used to research the meta function of image in the textbook,and inter-semiotic complementary theory is for the complementary of image and text in the discourse.The research materials are eight high school English textbooks of FLTRP,the research questions are: 1,what is the visual function of images in FLTRP High School English Text Books? 2,how can the images and texts in the textbook accomplish meaning?The findings of the essay are: 1,that narrative representation takes a very big proportion in representational meta function,and offer is the main interactive relation and the social relationship in images are close takes most.Because the textbook composers want to establish an intimate and harmonious relationship for readers.The com-positional meanings in textbooks are realized by unknown information value and real salience,because the main idea is offered by text,and the role of image is assistance.2,The inter-semiotic complementarity of image and text is realized by repetition and synonymy,which means they are completely connected with each other.It is very useful for students and teachers to make full use of the text and image together,because the mono modal discourse can not accomplish the whole meanings of the combination of text and image.By the results of this essay,multimodal discourse of the textbook is helpful for teachers to instruct students how to realize the importance of images in the textbooks,and it is also useful for students to get the skill of multiliteracy energy.Textbooks are good teaching materials for students critical thinking nurturing.The essay instructs teachers to pay much attention to the connections of image and text in textbooks,it is the requirements of multiliteracy.The textbook composers should arrange the image according to the characteristics of students' cognitive and function of the books.
