Lexical Cohesion Theory first came into being in the 1960 s.And since the 1980 s,Lexical Cohesion,which is regarded as one branch of Textual Cohesion Theory,has begun to be applied in the English Reading Teaching.After that students’ reading ability has been improved.By means of lexical cohesive devices,students can better comprehend the semantic relations between words,sentences and paragraphs in a text.As a result,they can better understand the meaning of the whole text.Therefore,Lexical Cohesion is regarded as a way to improve students’ reading ability.In order to understand whether Lexical Cohesion is effective or not to improve the English reading ability for the junior middle school students and the practical application of Lexical Cohesion Theory in the English Reading Teaching,the research is mainly conducted by questionnaires and interviews among junior middle school English teachers and their students.During the internship in a junior middle school,the researcher has also observed some changes in junior middle school students’ attitude toward English Reading,and the English teachers are also changing their teaching approach accordingly.By means of interviewing,the researcher makes a further study about how Lexical Cohesion Theory is used to help teachers improve the English teaching quality and then the researcher can understand the changes of teachers’ teaching methods as well.According to the questionnaires and interviews for teachers in the Junior Middle School,it has been found that 69% of the teachers think it is quite necessary to use Lexical Cohesion in teaching English Reading,because it is found effective to enhance their English Reading Teaching.According to the questionnaires and interviews,it has also been found that 80% of the students think that it will be more helpful for them to understand the meaning of English words,sentences and the whole passage if their teachers use Lexical Cohesion devices to teach a text in their reading class.Meanwhile,they can even speed up their reading with a better comprehension.In a word,Lexical Cohesion Theory has afforded a new idea and perspective for English Reading Teaching and Research.As far as the research is concerned,it has been found that applying Lexical Cohesion Theory into English Reading Teaching in Junior Middle School.can not only develop students’ English reading speed,but also improve their reading ability.Besides,it can help students enhance their reading comprehension in English.Meanwhile,it can also improve the English Reading Teaching quality.The research findings thus provide a reasonable threshold for the students to improve their English Reading Ability.In addition,the research also offers a new perspective and a new reliable approach for the English teachers in Junior Middle School.Hopefully,it will contribute to the development and improvement of the English Teaching and Learning in Junior Middle School all over the country in the near future.
