This paper mainly investigates the lexical chunks used by high school students in their writing and oral English and aims to probe into the correlation between lexical chunks and their writing and oral English performance.In this paper,the following questions are discussed: firstly,the usage of lexical chunks in writing and oral English;secondly,the influence of lexical chunks to writing and oral English.The research design of this paper is to set up writing and retelling in the limited time.The students are from Grade one of a high school in Chongqing,there are 30 students in this class.Through the writing and retelling parts,there are 30 samples of.Then according to the classification of Michael Lewis,the lexical chunks can be divided into four kinds: words;collocation;fixed expressions;semi-fixed expression.Then use SPSS to analyze the data,and found that: firstly,the words number,lexical chunks number and T unit in writing is more than in retelling.Seeing from the lexical chunks,the number in writing is far more than in retelling.Secondly,using the SPSS to do a liner analysis and find that lexical chunks do a positive influence to the score of writing.Thirdly,there are differences in student's use of lexical chunks.we find that word,collocations and semi-fixed expressions used in writing are more than in oral;fixed expressions are almost uniformity.Through this investigation,it clearly shows that the teacher should emphasize the importance of learning lexical chunks and using when teaching,making the students use lexical chunks accurately in writing and oral English,this can improve the students' writing and oral performance.
