Teacher talk refers to a special language that the teachers use it to help students acquire knowledge.Also,it is used by teachers to organize teaching activities in class.It is not only the main part of teacher's actions,but also the key to students in acquiring the second language.Meanwhile because to have class is the basic form of students to participate learning,therefore,it is very important for teachers to regard teacher talk as a communicative tool which connects students with teacher in class.Teacher talk is one of essential ways of inputting language in class and it also serves as a role model for the students.Teacher talk is not only an important medium for teaching content,but also a key for teachers to organize the class.Therefore,the quality and quantity of it will not only influence the interest and efficiency in students' acquiring,even the success or failure of a class depends on it.Economics of language is a newly rising interdisciplinary field,which mainly based on theory of economics and linguistics.It applied the theories,methods and tools of economics in linguistics.The theoretical basis of this study is new economy principle of speech which proposed by Xiang Mingyou and the cooperative principle.The main purpose of this study is to find the situation of English class in high school and try to analysis whether teacher talk is in line with the requirements of economics.The subjects of this study are twenty teachers and their students who are from high school attached to Shandong Normal University.During two months,the research methods like class observation and questionnaire survey were used.Meanwhile,it also collected information by transcribing the recording into text and comparing some case study.In this study,in order to give some understanding about English class in high school and help teachers to improve their quality in teaching.It analyses four aspects with new economy principle: the amount of teacher talk,discourse distribution,teacher's classroom questioning behavior and teacher's feedback.With investigation and analysis,the main results are as follows:(1)Most teachers spend about 20 to 30 minutes in talking on class and the quality of teacher talk is far more than students talk.But the experienced teacher has better ability in controlling time.That is to say,they are closer to equalization criterion than new teacher.(2)When questioning,teacher would like to choose display questions more than referential questions and in that case,over 79% students say they don't have enough time to think about questions.But the result also shows that almost every student has a positive attitude on questioning and they think it could help them improve theirstudy.(3)It is shared experience that influences students how much new information they can understand.The recent study shows that shared experience makes both teacher and students choose topics which close to their own knowledge structure.Therefore,it is very important for teachers to do feedback in class.But in terms of economics,it works badly.Because according to this study,teachers' simple one-word feedback takes 43.2%.(4)For teachers' instructional directives,teachers more like to use command instructions.But this kind of instruction will make students feel anxious so they can't do best in class.Based on the result,this paper will also provide some suggestions to English class in high school:(1)The teacher talk should as much as possible fit the equilibrium index.(2)Optimize the language skills of teachers in the English class.(3)From the perspective of students,teachers should create relaxed classroom atmosphere.(4)The teacher needs to reduce negative effect in the class.
