English writing plays a very important role in English teaching.The use of cohesive devices in the text has an effect on writing quality.Although the New Curriculum Criterion puts forward requirements in writing from the aspect of text,there are still many problems in both the teacher's teaching and students' writing.It is far from the demand of textual level.Firstly,teachers do not pay enough attention to writing.Secondly,the teaching of writing is lack in building a systematic framework.Thirdly,There are numerous problems in the process of teachers' correcting and commenting on the compositions.Besides,there are so many problems in the students' different learning stages,such as attending a lecture,writing a composition and giving feedback to the teachers' comment.Based on the study background,the author selects the students in Grade 11 of the Affiliated Middle School of Hainan Normal University as the investigation objects,aiming to have a description of the usage of five cohesive devices in students' composition from the aspect of quality and quantity.Besides,the relationship between the usage of cohesive devices and writing quality is analyzed as well.Based on the analysis of three aspects,the author summarizes the reasons why the students make mistakes in their writing from the angle of cohesion.And the corresponding solution strategies are concluded.On the basis of the outline and research achievements of the cohesive theory by Halliday& Hasan,the author analyzes the compositions written by 80 high school students.The findings can be demonstrated as follows: 1.The distribution of those five kinds of cohesive devices is not so uniform.2.Students make more cohesive mistakes in the aspect of grammar rather than lexis.3.The usage rate of cohesive devices is related to the quality of writing.4.The usage of different cohesive devices are varied in the two groups(G for high scored compositions and P for low-scored texts).5.The greatest influence of cohesive devices on writing quality is conjunction,then lexical cohesion,reference is no correlation with the writing quality.Based on the findings,the author concludes the reasons and inquires corresponding solution strategies from the aspect of teachers and students.The students' weak learningfoundation in English,poor application ability and the negative transfer of mother tongue have an bad effect on their study.The teachers' ignorance of cohesion,misunderstanding of English writing teaching and shortage of strategies influence their teaching quality.So students can improve their writing ability by reciting and imitating.Moreover,the teachers' teaching strategies are as follows.Firstly,they should stress the importance of cohesion in teaching activities.Secondly,they should pay attention to the explanation of the concept of cohesion in teaching.Thirdly,the negative transfer of mother tongue can be conquered by comparing the differences between Chinese and English.At last,the comments of the students' composition should not only center on language mistakes.All these strategies link to each other and they should work together.And problems in any steps may have a bad effect on teaching quality.On one hand,the thesis can enrich the study on English writing from the aspect of cohesion.On the other hand,the author put forward so many practical strategies to improve students' writing ability.At the same time,shortages exist as well,errors can not be avoided.Firstly,the number and type of the samples are too limited.Secondly,the judge of the cohesive devices in the thesis is subjective.These two factors contribute to the data errors of the research.Further more,the feasibility of the strategies given by the author need to be tested.It will be improved in my teaching practice in the future.
