English verb Be is a very important grammar in the whole process of English learning.Although the students learn it from the early stages of English learning,it does not mean that middle school students can master the verb Be.Due to the variety of forms and functions,the acquisition time span,verb Be has become difficult for the beginning of L2 learning.So what about the acquisition of English verb Be for Chinese middle school students? At home and abroad,the researches on verb Be are not much,especially for middle school students.In this study,a questionnaire survey was used to test the third year of junior high school students and the third year of senior high school students.And this study tries to show how the Chinese middle school students acquire Be.After the investigation and analysis,we found that students from both the third year of junior high school and the third year of senior high school have a good command of the main verb Be with small individual differences;that the sudents from the third year of junior high school command of the semi-auxiliary Be is poor,and with the improvement of the L2 learning,their proficency level gradually increased;and that both the third year of junior high school students and the third year of junior high school students can not command well on the auxiliary Be,although the third year of junior high school students have a better command of it in simple constructions.It is assumed that the syntactic property of the three“Bes" determines their sequence of the acquisition of Be,with auxiliary Be in the top,semi-auxiliary Be second,and Main Verb Be in the bottom in L2 acquisition.With the discussion above,the teaching suggestion are as follows.First,English teachers should be based on the concept of student-centered.Second,make full use of TPR teaching method,to create a suitable situation for students to learn verb Be.The last but not the least,teachers should continue to learn,play the spirit of innovation,and constantly explore more and more good teaching methods.
