The Study Of Students' Participation In University Governance In America

Recently,students' participation in higher education governance is a significant global higher education developmental trend.For a long time of developing,the students' participate in America has a mature mechanism,and have made great achievement in right protected and power wielded.This paper focuses on the history and present situation of student participate in university governance in America,and then provide some useful suggestions for the same thing in our country.The history of students' participation in American university governance includes three periods,they are the slowly developing period,radical period and institutional period,and began to have a mature model in institutionalized period.According to the statute of university,it set rules in different types to make students get the right of participating in university governance.According to the power's excise of students' participation in university governance,it's wielded by two main forms: they are individual participation and groups participation.The individual participation includes:student representatives involved in different kinds of university government committee,participate through Ombuds office,participate through evaluating of teaching and participate in logistics management.The groups participation includes two main method,the first is the student association in the whole country,such as “Student Governance Association”,“American Student Governance Consortium” and so on.The other is the student association in every university,such as “Student Governance Consortium”,“Student Media” and so on.Through the studies above,the students' participation in American universities has profound historical foundation,effective rights protection,diversity of participation,its development has a more mature model.Through teasing the situation of our country,we can find that there are many problems existing in our students' participation in university governance by comparison.The students' participation in university governance started late,whether it is in the protection of rights or in the exercise of power,or in the improvement of students' participation ability,we don't have enough mature experience and mechanism.Therefore,we should improve the present situation through three aspects:institutionalguarantee,practice,ability improving.
