With the Criterion of the New English Curriculum issued,cultivating students'reading ability is more and more important.Since the reform of the new English curriculum,English reading teaching has been improved greatly because of the efforts and hard work of a great number of teachers.However,there are still many problems existing in the process of English reading teaching,which can't meet the requirement of the New English Curriculum.But the lexical approach provides a new way for English reading teaching.This essay applies the lexical approach to English reading teaching based on the others'previous studies.Lexical chunks,as multiword structures,can be stored and retrieved as a whole.With the help of lexical chunks,students can have an overall structure of the long sentence and passage,understand the relation between sentences and deal with the detail information.The core of the lexical approach is lexical chunks teaching.In the process of lexical chunks'teaching,teachers should raise students' awareness of lexical chunks and improve students' ability of using lexical chunks.In this essay,tests,questionnaires and interview are used as instruments.Besides,the software SPSS20.0 is used to deal with and analyze the data.Therefore,the researcher can discover whether the lexical approach can improve students' reading ability and whether the lexical approach can reduce students' reading anxiety and increase their reading confidence.The researcher choose G1602(CC)and G1604(EC)in senor one in Shiyan Middle School to do the experiment.In CC,the researcher uses the traditional teaching reading method.While in EC,the lexical approach is conducted.For doing this experiment,all the students in CC and EC are required to take part in the pre-test,post-test,pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaire.What's more,ten students in EC are chosen to join the interview.The results show that student's reading ability in EC are better than the students in CC,and that EC the students reading anxiety is expected to be reduced and reading confidence can be increased to some extend.Although this research proves that the lexical chunks can improve students reading ability,there still exist some shortcomings.Because of the limited experiment and time,small experimental sample and single teaching material,the result of the study is not convincing enough.Therefore,the researcher hopes that the study can be improve further.
