As a comprehensive language skill,writing plays a vital part in English learning.Nevertheless,the current writing skill of senior high school students is not so good.Chunks have the characteristics of vocabulary and grammar,which can be stored as a whole.Thus,they can relieve the burden of recalling.Nevertheless,most studies on chunks center on identification and memory of chunks.Few studies deal with how to apply chunks-teaching into improving students' writing.Moreover,most of the theoretical and empirical researches on chunks-teaching focus on higher vocational colleges,junior colleges and universities while few researches touch upon senior high school students.This research is based on psychological memory theory,language acquisition theory and schema theory.The pattern of " Four Steps" chunk-teaching method is put forward,namely,selecting subject-related chunks,acquiring chunks independently,consolidating chunks with contexts and applying chunks periodically.It aims to find out whether this pattern can arouse students' interests in English learning;whether it can facilitate students' use of chunks and whether it can improve students'writing skills.The experiment suggests that this pattern can enhance students' interests and confidence in English learning and facilitate their writing fluency and accuracy.Thus it can boost students' writing abilities.On the basis of this finding,some suggestions are given on how to deepen students' and teachers' understanding on chunks and how to apply this teaching method into teaching more effectively.
