On The Application Of Scaffolding Instruction In High School English Reading Teaching

Abstract/Summary:
With the reform of the National Matriculation English Examination,there is an increasing demand for students to extract information through reading.Therefore,reading classes play an important role in high school English teaching.Improving students’ English reading ability has become the primary task of current reading classes.At present,although there has been some progress in English reading teaching as a whole,there are still many problems.For example,teachers are all conscious of cultivating students’ autonomous learning ability in English reading classes but the result is not good,which leads to the slow improvement of English reading proficiency.Their autonomous learning ability is still not improved.In order to change this situation,the scaffolding instruction has been used in the high school English reading teaching,and the detail process and the effect of its application are explored in this thesis.The scaffolding instruction is one of the core teaching modes under the constructivist concept.This study is conducted through literature review and data compilation,makes a comprehensive analysis on scaffolding teaching and learns from the scaffolding teaching mode summarized by predecessors.It mainly includes six parts: identification of the zone of proximal development,provision of scaffolding,access to the situation,independent exploration,cooperative exploration and effect evaluation.This study selects two classes at the same level as the main study subject.One of them is the experimental class and the other is the control class.The writer conducts a teaching experiment to these two classes for one semester.It also uses questionnaires,interviews,teaching case study and teaching experiments.In addition,it analyzes the data by SPSS19.0.The results show that effects of the scaffolding instruction in the high school English reading lessons lie in improving students’ English reading ability,self-confidence in English learning as well as their autonomous learning ability.The author learns the current situation of English reading teaching in senior high schools and discovers some specific steps for the scaffolding instruction which are suitable for high school English reading classes.It has also demonstrated that the effects of the scaffolding instruction lie in improving students’ English reading ability,autonomous learning ability and their self-confidence in English learning.Moreover,the scaffolding instruction can be used in the high school English reading teaching to effectively improve teaching effects of high school English reading classes,and gradually cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability during the reading learning.
