Wilkins(1972)once said that “Without grammar very little can be conveyed,without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed.” Krashen & Terrel(1983)pointed out that vocabulary is the basis of communication.From above we can see that vocabulary plays a vital part in second language acquisition.Vocabulary knowledge is notably divided into two dimensions: the breadth of vocabulary and the depth of vocabulary.The breadth of vocabulary means the vocabulary size of the learner.The depth of vocabulary means how well the learn knows about the words.Educators have always been exploring ways to improve the efficiency of students’ learning in the classroom and especially how to learn English vocabulary well.With the fast development of information technology,the combination of technology and education becomes the trend of the times.In 2007,the flipped classroom teaching model has gained wide attention.To test the effectiveness of flipped classroom in junior high school English vocabulary teaching in China,the author carried out the flipped classroom experiment in English vocabulary teaching in junior high school in the fall of 2016.In this thesis,the researcher mainly discussed about the following questions: The first one is that “Can flipped classroom teaching model improve students’ breadth of vocabulary knowledge in a better degree when compared with traditional teaching model? How does it influence learners of different proficiency level?” The second one is that “Compared with traditional teaching method,will flipped classroom help students achieve better in the depth of English vocabulary learning? How does it influence learners of different proficiency level?” The depth and breadth of vocabulary are two vital parts of English vocabulary learning.And the third question is that “How do students adapt to the flipped classroom teaching model?” The researcher conducted a four-month empirical research to find the answers to the questions.In the Vocabulary Size Test,students in the experimental class perform better than those in the control class,but the difference between them is not that significant.In the Word Association Test for the depth of English vocabulary,the experimental class get better grades than the control class.And in both tests,students of different proficiency level perform differently in the tests.The influence that flipped classroom teaching model has on students is also not the same.According to the results above,there is no denying that flipped classroom is a good try for educational reform.In order to maximize the teaching effect in the future,teachers,schools and society should provide students with high-quality lecture-video and advanced technical support,careful instruction and good study atmosphere.In the promotion of the flipped classroom,the researcher believes that the most important thing is to reform students’ study habits.Because the purpose of flipped classroom is to improve learning efficiency.What is more,it inspires life-long learning through classroom experience and the interested in learning.
