A Framing Analysis Of Chinese Newspapers Reports On The PX Events

Public protests against PX have erupted in some cities of China, including Xiamen, Kunming, Chengdu, Ningbo and Maoming since 2007. Due to the mass coverage of the media, these events have aroused public concerns extensively, subsequently to make PX the symbol of risk amid public view.In accordance with the requirements of content analysis, a total of 350 materials have been collected from January 2007 to the June 2015. Samples are divided into three major types: official newspapers, professional newspapers and financial newspapers, accompanied by constructing a set of categories which include the page layout, report genres, news sources, news frames and report tendencies. With the main research approach of framing analysis, the research focuses on how PX events are presented in the newspapers in addition to discussing how the media reproduce PX events exerting frameworks.The framing analysis is mainly comprised of two aspects: frame distribution within the issue cycle, the correlation analysis among news frames, news sources and report tendencies. In the interim, news sources have changed from government officers to journalists themselves. “Public opinion and the procedure justice framework” evolve into the mainstream, whereas the market-oriented media prefer the framework of “environment risk”. Along with the interaction and dependency residing amid journalists and sources, the media, more often than not, regard the investigation by journalists as the primary news sources to manifest journalistic professionalism. In addition, the appearance of such news sources as “foreigners”, “foreign organizations” in reports, coupled with the introduction of “foreign experience” framework, exhibit that “foreign stones may serve to polish domestic jade”.One of the most concerned phenomena in the study is that the voice of the local people gradually disappeared in the news.
