Wireless network has penetrated into all aspects of human life, and is changing the way of human production and life, speeding up the pace of social progress because of the characteristic of flexibility, convenience, low cost and expansibility. As an important branch of wireless network,Wireless Ad hoc Networks and Wireless Sensor Networks can meet the requirements of some special scenarios, which has been widely concerned recently. However, the routing problem has been a hot research topic in this field.Location based routing protocol can transmit data packets directionally and establish a relatively short path, which can reduce the routing overhead and end to end delay. On the other hand, network coding can improve the efficiency and reliability of data transmission by encoding and transmitting the received data. Therefore, this paper proposes two improved routing protocols based on the advantages of network coding and geographical routing. The main work of this paper is as follows:This paper first briefly introduces the basic principle and the construction method of network coding, and analyzes the research status of the coding aware routing. And then,it reviews the typical coding aware routing from two aspects namely expanding the coding structure and the combination of coding and energy saving technology. In addition, based on the geographical routing, this paper proposes an Improved Location-based Coding-aware Routing(ILCR).This protocol introduces the concept of muti-step friend peer with a consideration of the geographical location and coding opportunities information of neighbor nodes as a selection criterion for the next hop node to a friend. Therefore,it can ensure the data forward transmission and full awareness of coding opportunities to establish a path with lower delay and larger coding opportunities. Moreover,ILCR is further refined to measure the standard of size of coding opportunity and to make modification to the routing metrics.ILCR is superior to the existing protocols in terms of the coding number, throughput, delivery ratio, end to end delay and so on.Furthermore, this paper analyses the shortcomings of the classical location based routing protocol TPGF in node separation and path optimization. Then several improvement protocols of TPGF are discussed.Based on the analysis,a Network coding and Energy aware TPGF routing(NE-TPGF)is proposed with a consideration of three factors such as the location of the nodes, the chance of coding and the remaining energy. At the same time,it introduces the coding number and the cost of link to measure the coding opportunities.NE-TPGF can further improve the network throughput and delivery ratio, reduce the end to end delay and the energy consumption of the node. Finally,we use OPNET to develop the proposed protocols and other protocols in the literature, and evaluate their performance by extensive simulations. The simulation results verified the effectiveness of the proposed protocol.
