With the development of modern multimedia,the demand for three-dimensional models is gradually increasing,such as films,computer games and virtual reality.Now the main ways to create 3D models is using modeling tools or using 3D scanners to es-tablish models.Unfortunately,both of them have shortages.For modeling tools,users must be experienced;for 3D scanners,existing desktop-level scanners lose some de-tails of the model and are hard to interact with users.Image has fine details and is easy to acquire and generate,so we plan to edit de-tails on the image,then transform it through displacement mapping on the model to create the complex model with fine details.In this thesis,we construct a system to generate the details of the 3D model’s sur-face using images,which can satisfy the real-time interaction.User edit details and height information to the image,then use decals to map the image to the surface of the model,and finally apply displacement mapping to generate the detail.However,the number of points and faces will increase due to tessellation of the 3D model when us-ing displacement mapping,which will reduce the real-time property.To solve this,we use an adaptive tessellation method based on GPU to avoid useless computing and de-crease the number of points and patches in order to satisfy the real-time requirements.
