Around the may 4th movement of 1919,the trend of scientific education was popular.Influenced by the may 4th movement and the New Youth magazine,Hunan Dagong newspaper founded a number of science education column,with which concerned education extensively and profoundly.The most dynamic and valuable study of Hunan Dagong newspaper’s educational discourse are from 1919 to 1927.This period has almost built the overall blueprint of Chinese modern education,from early childhood education to higher education,from civilian education,compulsory education to overseas education,vocational education.It has been a pioneer either in exploring the educational philosophy or educational methods and mechanisms.Hunan Dagong newspaper ’ s educational discourse has great historical value.It emphasizes folksy and popularization,and fostering the scientific consciousness and scientific spirit of the people in the most close and subtle ways,giving full play to the social function of the scientific education discourse of the press.It pushed the "education of the people" to transform the national character,published "education to save the country" to achieve rejuvenating the country ’ s dream,which embodied a strong modernity.It advocated "adoption of western academic achievements",and had bold innovation on the education system and educational philosophy,reflecting its worldwide and forward-looking.However,the newspaper people copied the Western educational theory without considering the reality of the situation,and they were lack of a thorough revolutionary spirit,which showed its limitations.The educational discourse of Hunan Dagong newspaper also has its practical significance.The thoughts advocated by journalists as “cultivating talents as the basic”,“enlightening first” and “seeking truth scientifically” are accurate understanding on the law of education,triggering us to have reflection on today ’ s "utilitarian education","materialized education",and "scientific alienation".The debate on the nurturing of state consciousness by the people who run the newspaper can deepen our understanding on the education of "patriotism".The educational discourse of Hunan Dagong newspaper is a splendid record in Hunan’s history of news,the history of education and even the history of news and education of China.The historical responsibility,world consciousness and national consciousness,scientific spirit and the pursuit of democracy embodied by it are still shinning in modern society.
