Latent Semantic Similarity Based Interpretation Of Synaesthetic Metaphors

As an important cognitive way of human,metaphor is prevalent in our language and thinking activities.With the development of cognitive linguistics and contemporary brain science,the cognitive particularity and importance of synaesthetic metaphor are becoming more and more prominent.Thus the computational study of synaesthetic metaphor interpretation is being urgent now.Different from the general metaphor,synaesthetic metaphor is very embodied.We believe that it has its unique mechanism of comprehension.Metaphor interpretation is a process of "seeking similarities while reserving differences".But the similarity may not be obvious,especially in synaesthetic metaphor,the direct description of the different senses appears to be "irrelevant" because the similarity between them is latent.After dialectical analyzing relationship between metaphor and similarity,we find the core of synaesthetic metaphor interpretation is to find the latent semantic similarity between different sensory experience.Based on this,we propose a latent semantic similarity based synaesthetic metaphor interpretation method.At the same time,this paper puts forward that the essence of metaphorical interpretation is the dialectical unity of accuracy and appropriateness.Based on this,we propose an adjectives’ five-sense correlation degree calculation method to make a computational study on this kind of relevance.In terms of synaesthetic metaphor interpretation,we innovatively interpret synaesthetic metaphor from both concrete and abstract dimensions.We use five-sense tags to filter the extracted perceptual features of the target,and then use WordNet to seek the latent semantic similarity.Finally we combine the latent semantic similarity distance and the Google distance to achieve the interpretation of synaesthetic metaphor.In terms of calculation of adjectives’ five-sense correlation degree,we selected the most direct and concrete sense adjectives as the paradigm words,and then uses WordNet to get the latent semantic similarity distance between target words and them.Based on this,a derivation method is proposed to realize the five-degree correlation calculation of the adjectives.In summary,this paper based on latent semantic similarity presents an interpretation method for synaesthetic metaphor,and uses WordNet to realize the five-degree correlation calculation of adjective.Experiments show that our approach of synaesthetic metaphor interpretation is effective,and it is also meaningful to calculate the five-degree correlation of adjectives.
