In recent years, the world has witnessed China's entrance of aging society. With the accelerating growth of elderly population, health demands for them have never been so urgent. In consideration of the growing amount of aged people and the increasing diversifications in pension system, nursing homes will accommodate more elderly in the future. As a result, the deployment of Central Monitor System(CMS)is necessary, especially for the aged people with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Most of the existing CMSs are based on traditional monitoring approaches.Specifically, traditional CMS adopts communication cable as its physical layer, transfers data by the widely used TCP,HTTP,or some other proprietary protocols. The backend server of traditional CMS is usually a personal computer,in which some private systems(including client software)are deployed for data resolution and video display.Unfortunately, these communication protocols are too complex to guarantee the effectiveness of the client-server communication. With a relatively high computation cost and space overhead, the communication terminals of traditional CMS are suffering from high power consumption, especially for the terminals running on batteries. For devices running in limited computing and power resources, the shortcomings of TCP and HTTP protocol is obvious. The team CoRE in IETF proposed a new protocol called CoAP in consideration of IPv6.In comparison with TCP and HTTP,the CoAP protocol based on UDP is more resource-conserving and communication-efficient.With the advantage of CoAP,the heterogeneous fusion of IPv6 protocol in some limited devices becomes feasible, and the increasing demand of IP resources in the era of Internet of Things can be satisfied. In addition, both of the CoAP and HTTP protocols are based on the REST architecture, and they can be converted from each other easily. This paper proposes a new CMS which is based CoAP protocol,to our knowledge this is the first time researchers take the advantages of CoAP protocol in benefiting CMSs.Our new CMS takes CoAP as the communication protocol, and uploads data to the embedded local server through RF chips. After that, the embedded local server updates the XML file based on the received data which is previously stored in the local database.Benefiting from the Web-service provided by the embedded local server under CoAP protocol, the deployment of CMS in PC and the development of private client in smartphone become unnecessary. After just an installation of the CoAP plug-in on mobile device,it becomes quite convenient to collect and parse the data through Web-browser.With lower power consumption and longer standby time, our new CMS based on CoAP protocol is much more efficient than traditional CMSs based on TCP/TCP protocol.
