China is the largest textile and garment producing and exporting country in the world.Due to the extensive use of dyes,the textile industry is also a high pollution industry.Heavy metal(Fe,Hg,Cr)and dye(alizarin red S)are the most important environmental problems in textile industry.With the development of the textile industry,a large number of dye wastewater is discharged into the environment,which is increasingly a threat to our environment even in the survival of human beings.Various advanced oxidation technologies have been proposed for the color removal,and the electrochemical oxidation has been considered as one of the most promising technologies that is easily applicable to automation,friendly to environment,and can oxidize the toxic organic compounds effectively.When Fe/Al composite hydrogel anode is used,the Al and Fe dissolve at the anode and hydrogen gas is released at the cathode.The Al and Fe ions can be consumed in water and react to a solid Al(OH)3 and Fe(OH)3 precipitate,which are effective coagulants for the pollutants.In the present work,both aluminum and iron coagulants were generated concurrently upon applying current across the electrode system.Al and Fe ions in alginate hydrogel electrode could be released to composite inorganic polymer coagulants which are of great importance to control water pollution.The Al and Fe species act as a coagulant by combining with the pollutants to form large size flocculants.This paper studies Fe/Al composite hydro gel electrodes electro coagulation(EC)and adsorption of Alizarin Red S(ARS).ARS removal efficiency and degradation mechanism when apply Fe/Al composite hydro gel electrode were investigated.The optimum experimental factors and degradation of ARS were discussed.ARS degradation was optimal operation at initial pH 3 with O2.The experimental results showed that the COD removal efficiency was better,reaching to about 90%when applying the novel electrode system.The discoloration rate also reached the best effect of 99%in the superior technical conditions.It is found that the application of ultrasonic helps to accelerate the electro coagulation of ARS.This study not only realizes the ultrasonic,flotation,coagulation,and adsorption of the combination,but also gains economy and environment.Consequently,the unique performance of Fe/Al composite hydro gel electrodes opens promising perspectives for fast,high and economical treatment of wastewater contains dyes or/and organic contaminants.
