Wei Litong,a famous medical scientist,neo-Confucianist,yi-ology scholar during Kangxi and Yongzheng period in the Qing Dynasty,was the military and administrative governor of Jiangchang Town.Besides performing his duty,he also concentrated on writing.His surviving medical works included 18 volumes of The Original Meaning of Treatise on Cold Damage and 22 volumes of The Original Meaning of Essentials from the Golden Cabinet,These works were written based on decades' of his experience in medicine,and gave detailed annotation on Treatise on Cold Damage and Essentials from the Golden Cabinet,with unique and incisive opinions.For those not specified by Zhang Zhongjing,he gave precise interpretation,which was considered as great explanation works of Zhang Zhongjing's opinions.Objective:This paper aims to systematically and comprehensively analyze Wei Litong's achievements in critical interpretation of TCM works through deep study and exploration on The Original Meaning of Treatise on Cold Damage,The Original Meaning of Essentials from the Golden Cabinet and relevant literatures by Wei Litong,so as to enrich the content of Chinese medical literature,providing references for clinical application of Zhang Zhongjing's thoughts.Methods:Philology,critical interpretation of ancient texts,history,comparative analysis,inductive deduction,and other research methods were used to search and collect relative literatures,and comprehensively interpret Wei Litong's surviving medical works The Original Meaning of Treatise on Cold Damage,The Original Meaning of Essentials from the Golden Cabinet and other reference materials,and then refine Wei's academic thoughts,analyze the characteristics and achievements of Wei's critical interpretation of TCM works.Results:The main body of the paper is divided into eight chapters,including the following results:The first chapter summarized the influence of Confucianism on traditional Chinese medicine in the Qing Dynasty from the perspective of history,and outlined the social background of medical annotations literature.And this chapter also sorted out the influence of Wei's family history and cultural deposits on his academic thoughts,as well as comb Wei's life record and achievement in his official career.The second chapter dealt with the summary and versions of Wei's The Original Meaning of Treatise on Cold Damage,The Original Meaning of Essentials from the Golden Cabinet,and briefly introduced the Yi-ology annotation work General Solution of the Book of Changes,literary work Huai Fang Collection and others book.The third chapter summarized Wei's academic origins and arguments.The effects of The Book of Changes,Buddhism and Taoism classics,Cheng Zhu Neo-Confucianism,The Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic,The Classic of Difficult Issues and various generations of medical commentators on Wei's interpretation were elaborated.The fourth chapter to the seventh chapter discussed the commentary contents,writing characteristics and deficiencies of Wei's The Original Meaning of Treatise on Cold Damage and The Original Meaning of Essentials from the Golden Cabinet,and systematically collated and analyzed the specific contents of the The Original Meanings.Chapter eight summarized the reference and evaluation of each physician on The Original Meanings and analyzed the role of Wei's academic contribution to later generations.Conclusion:Firstly,Wei Litong read Confucian books when he was a child,and is proficient in traditional Chinese medicine,the Book of Changes,classics of Buddhism and Taoism.At the same time,he was also influenced by Neo-Confucianism at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty.He used Confucianism,Buddhism and other ancient Chinese philosophical theories to explain Treatise on Cold Damage and Essentials from the Golden Cabinet,which was different from other physicians.Secondly,the contents of Wei's interpretation of The Original Meaning of Treatise on Cold Damage mainly included revising chapters,referring to The Book of Changes,integrating Buddhism and Taoism,passing through the full text,and referring to various medical schools,and their core contents were six-channel theory of "exterior and interior,ascending and descending,cold and heat,deficiency and excess".Thirdly,the contents of Wei's interpretation of The Original Meaning of Essentials from the Golden Cabinet mainly included interpreting words and phrases,clarifying the chapters and sentences,searching for names,and deciding on the basis of arguments;tracing the source and linking with Treatise on Cold Damage;comparative stating to explain Essentials from the Golden Cabinet;understanding Confucianism,and referring history;combining neo-Confucianism with deep meanings;making clear notes and clarifying medical theories;detailed explain principle,method,formula and herbs.Fourthly,Wei has learned great knowledge with brilliant talent.Therefore,the writing of The Original Meanings is very literary.Moreover,because Wei has served as an official,The Original Meanings is slightly political.Fifthly,in the specific discussion of The Original Meanings,it is believed that lily disease belongs to the qi syndrome,and the discussion of Weijing Decoction may be irrational.Sixthly,Wei's The Original Meanings has been recognized by the later generations of physicians,and has been quoted and evaluated in the works of Chinese and Japanese traditional physicians,with far-reaching and extensive influence.
