"Character dance" Character dance, a genre of dance which has uniqu e form of presentation, is an important component part and plays a significant role in classical ballets. From the section of ballet history, Jean Georges Noverre brought in the concept of demi-character dancing and categorized classical dance into noble(heroic), demi-character(gallant), comic. And then it was inherited and developed by Carlo Blasis, who distinguished three types of dancers: the serious, the demi- caractère, and the comic dancer and subsumed all the folk dances under the concept of character dance. Character dance has been playing an important role throughout the history of ballet development by outstanding personality, shaping characters, advancing the plot and adding luster to classic ballets with diverse folk dance styles.This paper thoroughly discusses several specific character dances and illustrates the function and status of character dance in ballet from the perspective of expression form, style, content and personal performing experience and demonstrate the aesthetic value and the significance for ballet-dancer training of character dance.
