For a long time, the relationship between self-esteem and aggression is a research focus. As an individual characteristic variable, could self-esteem predict aggression? A growing number of studies have found that compared with people with low self-esteem, those who hold positive feelings of themselves are more aggressive. As a result, long-standing traditional view that low self-esteem leads to violence was challenged, and someone pointed out that there is two kinds of high self-esteem, secure one and fragile one. It is the latter that produce more hostility and aggression. The phenomenon that compared with low self-esteem, high self-esteem is not single but has several types, which is also named heterogeneity of high self-esteem, has been focused and widely studied. On the other hand, as to how self-esteem influences the individual's aggression, many researchers have indicated that there could be some moderators or mediators, and some of them have pointed out that emotion could be a reasonable and important one. Combining pre-exiting research methods, as undergraduates of Nanjing normal university were selected for the research, the present study attempted to apply measurement method and experimental method for providing a clearer view of respective effects of the change of anxiety and depression on heterogeneous high self-esteem and aggression after failure. The experiment was designed to explore it, and the results showed as follows:1. The failure-procedures successfully induced the negative emotional reactions to failure;2. After induced failure, secure high self-esteem produced less negative emotions change than fragile one, and it had significant differences between them;3. After induced failure, secure high self-esteem produced less aggression change than fragile one, and it had significant differences between them;4. On the relationship between heterogeneity of high self-esteem and the change of aggression after failure, the change of anxiety and depression played completely mediating role respectively.
