TAO Jingsun (1897-1952) is one of the significant members of early creation society of China modern literary, who had outstanding achievements in many areas including medical science, literature, drama, and music etc. Until 1990s, he was once recognized as "a traitor to the nation" by the society for his assistance to the Japanese government during the complex historical background and environment. Only after 1990, thanks to the reform and opening policy, and the efforts from Mr. XIA Yan (1900-1995), a left wing prestigious litterateur, and also one of the main leaders of the new China literary and art circles, TAO's reputation had been restored. In recent years, the study to his work has achieved considerable progress, but there's still a lack of systematic research regarding his "middleman" literary characteristic between China and Japan.From life to the spirit and literature, Tao Jingsun have disseminated the Japanese color among contemporary writers from the same era. At the same time, he also has Chinese cultural gene, which make him become a "cultural middleman". From this point of view, this paper makes an investigation on the middle nature of life and literature, which is also called the characteristics of China-Japan fusion or variation, exploreing its special status and structure in Chinese modern literature. First of all, combing the "middle man" life of Tao Jingsun. From childhood to maturity, Tao Jingsun's entire educational experience, literary creation, are both completed in Japan and the Japanese environment. Thus the Japanese characteristics of life and literature are formed. And with the traditional Chinese family education and atmosphere, potential gene of Chinese culture,Tao Jingsun can often intercourse between the Japanese environment and Chinese culture to absorb,assimilate and cross culture.Thus,the "Japanese sentiment" and "Chinese feature" in Tao's literature has been formed. The thesis focuses on the argumentation and arrangement of the private fiction and non private fiction, and examines the characteristics of the literature, which is a "intermediate state",the absorbing and discarding of the cultural. At the same time, pay attention to later writings " suicide note for Japan" (1952),and investigate Tao's important change in the later period,pointing out that the"Chinese heart" and "China soul" are the internal support to the literary development.
