Tony is the hero and narrator in The Sense of an Ending,a novel written by Julian Barnes,a famous English Contemporary novelist. In the memory of Tony,he has established two different self-images.One is nice and harmless, the other is jealous and evil. The experiential ego in the first-person perspective in this novel makes the old self of Tony reasonable, while the narrative ego in the first-person perspective makes the narration of Tony suspicious. The narration techniques in time such as the flashback and deceleration, and some sudden changes in plot make readers see closely how Tony broke the old self and then established the new one. What's more, once the readers take part in the novel more positively, they will have a deeper understanding of the tragedy in this novel. The double-contribution of the image of Tony in The Sense of an Ending delivers the following topics: in a sense, instead of the objective time,a person will change more likely in the psychological time;the memory of human beings is unreliable and the truth is then unacceptable, which Veronica in the novel means by telling repeatedly and metaphorically to Tony:”You will never get it.” However,we have no need to be frustrated by the unacceptable truth, because sometimes the truth itself may be not so important. The point is,in the pursuit of the truth,we will reflect and have a new understanding of ourselves and the others and the world.Only in this way,we will be more perfect.
