The Excavations of lacquer from ZENGHOU YI's Tomb is typical in the early Warring States Period because of the large quantity. This paper will make the lacquer patterns as object of study. First of all, I will analyze and reorganize the lacquer and put the study of the patterns in a concrete history. Secondly, dissection of the patterns is needed to summarize the aesthetic characters. This paper is divided into three parts; they are the introduction, the main body which includes three chapters and the conclusion.The research methods used and the research status are explained in the introduction part which plays a co-ordination role in this paper.The three chapters of the main part are the review of the lacquer, the lacquer patters and the aesthetic characters of the lacquer patterns. The emphasis will be the patterns and its aesthetic characters.The section on the review of the lacquer mainly introduced the excavation and the historical and cultural origins. These works all planed to contribute to the further study of the lacquer patterns.As the second part of the main body, I classified the lacquer patterns and studied the elements of the patterns and the way of decorate. So far, the whole picture is clear.Further studies of the aesthetic characters of the lacquer patterns carries on after the research above. The main contents are:the modernity of aesthetic, the primitiveness of the aesthetic values and diverse aesthetic style. The study of the modernity of aesthetic is based on the shape of the lacquer patterns. The way of handling the patterns or the overall arrangements of the whole picture and the use of modeling techniques are advanced and fit the modern aesthetic theories well. Therefore, this section introduces the Gestalt psychology to explore the forms of the lacquer patterns which opened up new perspectives and ideas for aesthetic studies. Although the patterns created by craftsman in the early warring state period fit the Gestalt psychology, however, confined to the background of aesthetic development, creators of the lacquer patterns shows an original aesthetic attitude which reflects the aesthetic attitude of certain Circumstances of the time. This paper discusses the primitiveness of the aesthetic values from two aspects:the worship of gods and the involvement of organics in aesthetic. Finally, the first two sections explore the aesthetic form and aesthetic attitude, the third part is the aesthetic style diversification. This layout arrangement breaks the systematic and progressive model, so that the explanation of the aesthetic style can be more reasonable and increases the degree of persuasion of the essay. Making the past serve the present is the purpose of this paper. So the last part of the paper is the usage of the study for today. Two thousand years ago people had already applied the principle of decoration of the patterns so skillful, which means the pursuit of the aesthetic existed since ancient times and continue to develop. The aesthetic needs in our society today is running high, and the application of patterns of this tomb should be more diversified, not just stay in a simple repeating certain patterns, but also to find its symbolic significance and creative approach, to serve today's society better.Result of the study is briefly summarized at the end of the paper. Lacquer from ZENGHOU YI's Tomb has a great influence on the decoration of patterns by the elegant composition, the smart structure, etc. Fully reflects the superb lacquer decoration techniques at that time and becomes a valuable asset in the history of lacquer patterns for us all.
