Accordion has been widely admitted and favoured as an instrument used in folk music genre.Usually, folk music will be re-modified before being played.A typical example is its application in France, where accordion music undergoes smooth development via French musicians' innovative efforts of adapting essential parts of the available local folk music.French accordion music is among the most splendid and popular pieces played in the world.Under the influence of advocated attempting of variation in music performance,in recent years,Chinse accordion players and composers also try new music forms by re-modifying Chinese classical folk music and melodies, such as by adding jazz elements or other music fragments found in Western music to the original music piece. One of the requisite requirements of re-modification is selecting appropriate and adaptable folk songs. For example,by reviewing past practices in both domestic and international performances and competitions,it is found that the Taiwanese song“Spring Breeze” allows most successful attempts. The song applies traditional Chinese pentatonic scales, and achieves incremental prominence in the pioneer development of Chinese accordion music. This dissertation investigates “Spring Breeze” in five sessions. The first session is the introduction.Thesecond session is a brief literature review, introducing the song's background information and analysing different versions of adaptations. The third part emphasizes on summarizing the common pattern of the re-modification of the song. The fourth part focuses on performance skills. Finally,it is the recommendations for future development of the accordion adaptation in China. This study is still at the exploratory stage due to insufficient academic research on Chinese accordion music. The resource is scarcely found in either domestic or other countries' database. The author wishes to analyse this piece of music by combining her own performance experience regarding its required performance skills and style. She also wishes to use it as a case study and generalise some common features of the accordion re-modification practices in China.
