Due to their polysemy,English spatial particles are one of the most important English parts of speech which lead to great difficulty for English learners.Linguists from home and abroad have still focused on the grammatical structure of spatial particles, others have focused their eyes on cognitive semantics, yet most research being confined to the field of prototype theory, image schema and conceptual metaphor. If research on spatial particles is simply focused on the study of syntax, the characteristics of polysemy can not be fully explained.Meanwhile, the teaching of English spatial particles does not work well if it is conducted only in the perspective of cognitive mechanism. So,based on Evans & Tyler 's model of principled polysemy,i.e.spatial scenes and conceptualization, this thesis combines image schema theory with pragmatic inferencing to investigate the proto-scene and other senses in the semantic network of English spatial particle OVER and apply them in the teaching of English spatial particles.Meanwhile,by integrating image schema and pragmatic inferencing,OVER can be better explained and its teaching and memory effect can be further strengthened.
