This thesis is highly relevant in that it summarizes the author's field experience at a conference so that more SI practitioners may learn from the lessons mentioned in this report. This paper takes the E-C SI of the Speech by Thomas Schulte at the International Policing Cooperation Sub-forum,the 8lle International Forum on Policing as an example to review the early-,mid-and late-stage preparation as well as the interpreting at the conference.By case analysis, the author reviews knowledge accumulation, language expressions used and techniques applied during the process. The author also carries out error analysis for the interpreting.By adopting the SI standard of "Expressive,Fluent and Timely",the author analyses the errors and omissions, improper words, syntax, register and how pauses and fillers occurred.Coping tactics are given accordingly. This thesis summarizes the major difficulties during E-C SI.The interpreter has to keep up with the speaker's slide-browsing pace, hear everything the speaker says and break free from the shackles of speakers' style. Thus, this paper comes to two conclusions:First, listening ability holds the key to quality E-C SI.Second, background knowledge plays an overriding role over language or techniques in successful SI.Interpreters should give equal importance to short-and long-term knowledge preparation.Lifelong learning and specializing in a particular industry point the future direction for interpreters.
