Elliot Carter(1908.12.11-2012.11.5)is a famous contemporary American composer whose music style is known for its complexity.He is a late bloomer,40 years after the prominence on the international stage,and adhere to their own creative style for more than half a century.He will Charles Ives the spirit of innovation with Nadia Boulanger to teach the new classical music combined with the traditional European style of music,creating a high degree of control,subjective coined music language to express his understanding of the society and the times.To a certain extent,his music creation reflects the characteristics of modern society and people's mental state.String Quartet plays a very important role in Carter's works,and he has created five string quartets in his lifetime.This paper will analyze Carter's first string quartet in1951,which is an early exploration and practice of the composition techniques of Carter.From the beginning of this work,Carter type of material,such as rhythm conversion,complex rhythm,composite structure,has begun to use a lot,and the constant complexity.This paper is composed of four chapters,the first chapter from the historical point of view,on the side of Carter's creative career to sort out,in order to rationalize the composer's creative process in a larger context.Second,the three or four chapter is the focus and core of this paper,is mainly carried out detailed research on the music ontology,including the works of the pitch materials,beat transformation method,the texture and structure analysis.Through the macro and micro on the music,respectively,so as to be familiar with the application of various elements of music in the works and the creation of music features.
