20th century was a renaissance period of polyphony and a lot of composers who treated polyphony as their most important technology emerged. They took “back to Bach” as a slogan and wanted to recur the counterpoint technology in Baroque, such as Shostakovich,Stravinsky,Bartók,Hindemith,Ligeti and so on.Darius Milhaud showed up as the representative of France.Compared to other technology that Milhaud used, polyphony was the most prominent one.And he was the first person who insisted on the research of polyphony and stuck to use it in his pieces. The chamber music ran through the 3 period of Milhaud's life, especially the stringquartets which were taken as the backbone of all his pieces. And as testfields of his composing,Milhaud put his excellent thoughts into them.Milhaud's composing caught the peak in 1920 s,the polyphony technology was much and outstanding. This thesis will choose Milhaud's early chamber music as a object from which we will extract his polyphony technology and the modality of polyphony music,so that we will able to find out the pioneering development in the polytonality and the innovative development that Milhaud made, hope we can summarize his system of polytonality as elaborate as possible.
