This paper systematically studies the concept of "structure" in the literary theory of Rene Wellek(1903-1995),a famous Western literary theorist,a literary critic and a comparative."Structure" is one of the most common terms and concepts in western philosophy and literary theory in the twentieth century.It is also the core concept in the literature theory of Wellek's.It embodies the close links between the Wellek's theory and the 20th century Western literary theory.The basic idea of the dissertation is as follows:Wellek's theoretic sources consist of Structuralist linguistics,New Criticism and Phenomenology.Based on the idea regarding"structure" as the core concept,the structural ontology and the structural strata of literary works are proposed.This paper also discusses the transcendence of the concept of"structure" to postmodernist literary theory and the discourse variation of "intrinsic study " in Chinese new period.In the innovation of the research,this paper analyzes some of the similar concepts,such as "material/structure","intrinsic study/extrinsic approach" and so on.At the same time,this paper also analyzes the reason why the "structure"as literary works noumenon is the same as the "structure" in the phenomenological sense in Wellek's literary theory.With regard to the research methodology,this paper adopts the multi-perspective vision,tries to explain the concept of "structure" in the twentieth century Western literary theory of plural discourse,in order to illustrates the important influence of Wellek's"structure" concept on the western literary theory of 20th century.
