Li Duoshi Compares The Imagery Of Chrysanthemum, Bamboo And Pine

Li Bai and Du Fu are the two great poets in the history of chinese ancient poetry.There are many researches on the two masters' poems,but the studies about the plant imagery of their poems arefew,especially lack the detailed and deeply analysis about the common plant imagery.There are various plant imageries in the poems of Li Bai and Du Fu,and some common plant imageries such as pine and cypress,bamboo,lotus and chrysanthemum are frequently appeared in their poems.Each plant imagery possess unique symbolic connotation,e.g.the pine and cypress represent faithful quality,the bamboo means nobleness,and the chrysanthemum represent the secluded attitude to real life.These plant imageries enrich the content of poems and portray the poems' inner world lively.Firstly,this paper hackled the plant imageries all sidely from the poems of Li Bai and Du Fu,and ascribed these numerous imageries into three categories:the wood imageries,the grass imageries and the bamboo imageries.Then,selected a few typical imageries such as the the pine and cypress imagery,the chrysanthemum and bamboo imageries from the three categories,so as to propose the comparison analysis about these selected imageries.The comparison analysis was carried out through the following several aspects to reveal the unique connotation of the same imagery in the poems of Li Bai and Du Fu:(1)Times background;(2)Regional difference;(3)Family origin;(4)The relation to tobuddhism and taoism thought;(5)Personal temperament.Finally,the paper studied the art structure and performance characteristic,and point out the reason for the plant imagery differences in their poems,so as to shed light on the unique characteristics among their thought and spirit,personality and sentiments,and art structure.This paper included four sections in addition to the introduction part:(1)The comparison study of the bamboo imagery and the chrysanthemum imagery respectively in the poems of Li Bai and Du Fu.This section listed the bamboo imagery and the chrysanthemum imagery and analysed their unique symbolic meaning.(2)The comparison study of the pine and cypress imagery.As the main plant imagery,the pine and cypress imagery appeared numerously in both poets' poems,whereas it had different connotations.In the poems of Li Bai,pine and cypress imagery mean faithful,aggressive,and the secluded attitude to life.However,the pine imagery from the pen of Du Fu implied his sympathy and concern to society.(3)The discrepancy of plant imageries in the poems of Li and Du and its cause.Li bai poetry plant image difference differences both internal personal factors,there are times,regional culture and li two people learn origin and other factors.From the personal side,temperament,personality,talent,artistic style,expression and objects ideal reality are two poems plants such as image difference of internal cause,and the different social background and life experience is li Bai poetry plant image difference of external cause.(4)Discussed the performance characteristics of plant imageries in the poems of Li and Du.Frank and upright were frequently used to describe the plant characteristic in Li Bai's poem,which indicated the bright personality of the poet.In addition,the green,blue and purple used in the plant imageries indicated intensive senses of color.In comparison,the poems of Du Fu showed great concern about the realistic,continuity and integrity of plant imageries.The art structure difference of plant imageries was also been studied from the perspective of compound modes and poetry forms.
