A Mercy is the ninth work written by Tony Morrison who is an outstanding female writer in the history of American literature.Since it was published in 2008,A Mercy has received warm responses from all walks of life.Based on the theory of postmodernism which was advanced by Ihab Hassan, this thesis analyzes the unpresentable, fragmentation and indeterminacy in the postmodernist features in A Mercy. The paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is a part of the introduction of theory, which introduces the unpresentable, fragmentation and indeterminacy of Ihab Hassan's view of postmodernism in detail.Chapter two deals with the unpresentable of characters.By analyzing Jacob's pursuit of materiality,Rebecca's attachment to religion,De Ortega's enslavement of slaves, the paper exposes human's despicable and cruel. The third chapter explores the fragmentary nature of the narration of the story.By analyzing the fragmented narrative structure and multiple narrative perspectives in the novel, the paper presents the fragmented features in the novel. The fourth chapter elaborates the indeterminacy of the theme in the novel. From multiple perspectives, the author discusses the slavery enslavement to various types of slaves,Christian's rejection of pegans, and the oppression of patriarchal society on women. The last part is the conclusion of the paper, which elaborates the value of the novel and the significance of the paper by means of the three main points of the view of Ihab Hassan's postmodernism.
