Discourse Analysis Of Refugee News From The Perspective Of Evaluation Theory

The Appraisal Theory is a new lexical and grammatical framework derived from the interpersonal meaning of functional linguistics,which focuses on the various attitudes that can be negotiable in the discourse.As a daily form of discourse,the news discourse is bound to use rich evaluation vocabulary resources to interpret the news events on behalf of the media and indicate that the media's position.Based on the Appraisal Theory,this paper makes a tentative analysis on the reports of refugees of German media,aiming at answering the following three questions:1)From 2015 to 2017,the German government's refugee policy has experienced three stages,for example,from “hesitation” to “welcome” then to “tightening”.In the process of the refugee policy adjustment,what are the differences on evaluation resource type during three periods? And what kind of distribution pattern is presented respectively?2)According to different evaluation resource types and distribution patterns respectively,what kind of attitude position is reflected?3)Through the use of evaluation resources,what impact will the refugee news discourse have on the formation of public opinion.The corpus of this study is from Der Spiegel International.In the international version of the official website from 2015 to 2017,printing the key words Germany,refugees and asylum seeker and selecting 60 news discourses which is of similar object of study and corpora size.The paper analyzes these corpora according to three stages.Through analyzing and discussing,this paper finds that in refugee news discourses,the frequency of attitude resources is the highest.Der Spiegel's different attitude can be implemented through a variety of attitude types,such as affect,judgment and appreciation.Explicit evaluation as well as implicit evaluation are integrated.The frequency of engagement resources is in the second place.Der Spiegel uses different ways to deal with the intervention of a certain attitude,including projection,modality and concessions,so as to get rid of responsibility for speech.The frequency of graduation is the least.The number of force is more than that of focus which makes Der Spiegel magazine highlight words strength.
