As Zhou Laixiang noted:"The west is the hometown for ’paintings’ while China is theland of ’poems’."Being both paintings of the classical age,the west attaches moresignificance to the art of representation, whereas the Chinese value highly the art ofexpression. This difference is not only a phenomenon within the field of painting, butalso a concrete manifestation reflecting psychological structures of various cultures. Both the idea of "conveying ideals through poems" and "the theory of imitation" haveimproved and perfected the ideal of harmony advocated by the ancient artistic aestheticsfrom different perspectives. The former idea achieves the unification of subject andobject while the latter brings about the unification of individuality and commonality.Forthe contemporary fine art,the classics and modemity hold sway and in the meantime, the east and the west merge with each other. To develop paintings,it is of great necessityto pinpoint one’s own foothold and starting point.First and foremost,it is quite necessaryto comprehend the classics and modernity:"purity" and "perpetuity" are the primarycharacteristics of art of modernism, while using the classic standards to find sustenancein pure art and perpetuity are the aesthetic ideals of traditional styles. From theperspectives of artists, anything is paintable.Nevertheless,an artistic ideology must beclear and definite, westernized Chinese style can be adopted, efforts shall not go halves, and a clear distinction should be drawn between the primary and the secondary.Thesequalities also constitute a symbol to evaluate whether the artist has grown into a seasonedlevel.
