Herbert Allen Giles(1845-1935)was a famous sinologist in England after James Legge and Alexander Wylie.He has been engaged in diplomatic activities in China for nearly 30 years,but has devoted his major energy and enthusiasm to the writings on China.Herbert Allen Giles has more than 60 works and translation works throughout his life.The content is all-encompassing and involves many aspects such as literature,religion,history and social life in China.He has contributed greatly to the spread of Chinese culture in the West.As for the Chinese scholar,the research on relevant academic achievements in China is not sufficient,and some researches mainly focus on his contributions to literary history and translation.This paper from Catalogue of the Wade Collection of Chinese and Manchu Books in the Library of the University of Cambridge is focused on the novel part.The compilation of catalogue versions,collation of collection and the historical data on the lives of the editors and collectors and their literary contributions,the study of the types and causes of the collection of the Thomas Wade books.To analyse in Western Sinologists' interest in the collection of Chinese literature.To examine the reasons and classifications of the Catalogue of the Wade Collection of Chinese and Manchu Books in the Library of the University of Cambridge and the basis of classification and the reason of serial directory,As the same time to analyze the western sinologist for Chinese novel directory in the same period,and highlights of the bibliography in the history of Sinology status with significance.
