Coercive diplomacy will use various coerced means, including the threat of using the force,in order to achieve the strategic goals. It is mainly manifested that the coercer may make diplomatic requests to the opponents, impose sanctions to enhance the threat, and even resort to the ultimatum. If it can be used successfully,it has the potential of achieving foreign policy objectives with considerably fewer costs.US reliance on the coercive diplomacy to deal with Iran's nuclear issue is one of the typical cases. The Iranian nuclear issue is one of the hot issues of international security. It reflects the contradictions and conflicts between Iran and the United States. The United States strongly urges Iran to suspend uranium enrichment activities, and even terminates the nuclear program. The United States worries that the Iranian nuclear issue will affect the Middle East and international security, threat the US global strategy and its security interests in the Middle East.Under the impetus of the United States, the UN Security Council has repeatedly adopted sanctions against Iran, but Iran insists on its right to peaceful use of nuclear energy and refuses to stop uranium enrichment under any circumstance. To further understand the policy changes of the United States against Iran, this paper attempts to track the United States' coercive diplomatic process against Iran, analyze the comprehensive use of the military threats, the economic sanctions, and the lure to Iran in the context of coercive diplomacy. In addition,to ultimately illustrate the reason why the United States could use the coercive diplomacy to reach Iran's nuclear agreement during the Obama administration, the paper will specifically investigate the process of the Iranian nuclear negotiations. The successful signing of a comprehensive nuclear agreement marked the success of the United States' coercive diplomacy against Iran.To some degree, the relationship between the two sides has also been improved.Howeverafter the new US president Donald Trump coming to power,he has expressed a series of hard-line attitude. The nuclear agreement has encountered with a lot of problems in its implementation.Whether the Iranian nuclear agreement will be wasted or whether the United States will still insist on taking coercion diplomacy against Iran in the future, this paper has spread further discussion and attention in the end.
