Education for international understanding is dedicated to promoting mutual understanding between different countries, ethnic groups and cultures, seeking the peaceful development of the world has been affecting the countries all over the world.Since it was put forward by UNESCO in 1946, it has become the trend of thought affecting the education revolutions deeply of countries all over the world.After being influenced by the trend of thought for education for international understanding and the national interests, the United States has promulgated a series of laws and policies related to education for international understanding since the World War Two. Social studies was born in the United States and it is a comprehensive social subject integrated with a variety of disciplines which is concerned about the status quo and development of the society. The Association of American Social Studies has promulgated two versions of the curriculum standards for social studies and the "Global Connection" theme is the direct reflection of education for international understanding. As it started relatively late in China, there are a lot of imperfections in education for international understanding in Chinese social studies.Therefore, this paper tries to analyze the curriculum standards of social studies in the United States and its characteristics and trend in practical education based on the development history and motivation of education for international understanding.Then,the paper puts forward some suggestions on the development of education for international understanding in China on the basis of the experience of the United States.This dissertation consists of three main parts. Firstly, this paper highlight the review of the development history of education for international understanding in the United States and then it makes preliminary analysis of the status quo for the education for international understanding implemented in the United States from three aspects-the country, the states, schools. Secondly, the paper analyzes the ten main themed structures for curriculum standards of the social studies and the structure"purpose-question-knowledge-process-product". Furthermore, it makes further analysis of the structure of content and comment under the "international relations"subject and compares and analyzes the cases in the old and new editions of curriculum standards. Next, the paper selects the typical cases of education for international understanding in the United States which are carried out by the infiltration of the subject and the integrated activities. The trend characteristics are summarized as well.Finally, it sums up the current situation and characteristics of education for international understanding in social studies of America, then it summarizes the policies and practices for the development of education for international understanding in China, compares and analyzes the present situation and problems existing in the education for international understanding in social studies of China, as well as their enlighten for education in China.
