The fusion technology of the infrared images and low light visible images has become more and more important in the image processing research. Due to the imaging mechanism limitation with the infrared camera and CCD camera, low contrast and large dynamic range have been presented on the images. To solve this problem, several suitable fusion algorithms of infrared images and visible images have been researched firstly. Secondly an innovative algorithm which has been proposed by this paper for the infrared images and visible images fusion has been implemented on the hardware platform TMS320DM6467. The specific works are as follows:(1) The classical image fusion algorithms of the infrared images and visible images were researched in this paper.The fusion algorithm of the maximum and minimum pixel gray value, the weighted average fusion algorithm and wavelet transform fusion algorithm were simulated by the software of MATLAB7.10 and the results were analyzed and compared.(2) A modular fusion method based on edge optimization for the infrared and visible images has been proposed by this paper and the subjective and objective evaluations were carried out simultaneously. Experimental results show that the algorithm is better than other algorithms on some indicators and could make the excellent fusion effect.(3) The TMS320DM6467 hardware platform was introduced in terms of the DM6467 processor core functions and features in detail; Moreover, the multi-channel video processing operating modes and other parts of the hardware platforms about the video decoder chip TVP5158 were introduced as well.(4) A software development platform was established and the software development kit for DVSDK was introduced. According to the hardware platform requirements, the Linux kernel driver and application level programming for the image fusion algorithm were modified for image reading and image processing and image displaying. At last, the image fusion algorithm of infrared and low light level was encapsulated in the Codec Engine framework following the XDM standards. Codes transplant was completed, and the fusion of infrared and low light level images was achieved on the TMS320DM6467 hardware platform.
