The rigorous global competition, rapid technological change and shortened product life cycle make it impossible for individual firms to meet all requests relevant to new product development(NPD).More and more firms have an increased interest in the open innovation paradigm, and involve external parties such as customers, suppliers, colleges into NPD projects. However, the success of NPD projects in open innovation has always been difficult because of the problem on resources coordination. As a powerful tool of resources coordination, the effectiveness of control been taken attention. This paper analyzed the effect of intra-organizational and inter-organizational control simultaneously on NPD performance, and further explored the interaction effect between them in open innovation. This paper summarized the related research on control.NPD performance and resource based theory(RBT)and proposed the conceptual model.According to the survey data collected from 243 participants, the results indicate that:The level of intra-organizational formal control and inter-organizational trust have significant positive effect on NPD performance. The level of intra-organizational professional control and inter-organizational contract control have no significant positive effect on NPD performance. The interaction effect between intra-organizational formal control and inter-organizational contract control,intra-organizational formal control and inter-organizational trust,intra-organizational professional control and inter-organizational contract control,intra-organizational professional control and inter-organizational trust have significant positive effect on NPD performance. The results have a better inspiration on how to improve NPD performance in open innovation.
