Female Interviewees’ Makeup And Hirability

In recent years,with the rapid growth of female laborer,women are increasingly into the workplace or even participating in the organization management.There is no difference of ability between women and men,women have the characteristics of leaders and they can competent in leadership role and even do better than men.However,women are often subject to prejudice and discrimination from gender stereotypes in job-seeking,promotion and so on.Female candidates may be prejudiced because of their gender identity during job interviews.In order to demonstrate their abilities or potential to the interviewers,women can influence the interviewers’ impression with their appearances to enhance their hirability,like makeup.Although a number of studies have found that women can enhance the hirability through makeup,they failed to explain why the enhancement effect can be produced and the boundary conditions of the effection.This paper reveals the mechanism of the makeup effection and the boundary conditions,which enrich the theory explanation of female appearance and provide effective advices for female candidates and interviewers.In particular,this paper explores the influence of females’ makeup on interview results from the perspective of signaling theory.At the same time,the paper constructs a conceptual model based on the mediation role of achievement motivation evaluation and the moderation role of clothing style.190 participants are collected during the experiments.The results shows that:(1)female candidates’ makeup promotes the hirability;(2)the interviewer’s assessment of the achievement motivations to female candidates mediates the relationship between makeup and the hirability;(3)there is an interaction effect of female candidates’ clothing style(masculine and feminine)and makeup on the hirability,in which feminine dress has stronger promotion to makeup’s effect.The innovations of this study are as follows.(1)Through the exploration of the mediating variables of female makeup’s effect,it is found that interviewers’ evaluation of female candidates’ achievement motivation is the explanation mechanism of the effect of makeup.(2)Applying the clothing style of female as a moderator of makeup effects,this paper enriches the study of moderating factors in female makeup field,and comprehensively explains the interaction between makeup and clothing style.(3)Signaling theory is systematically applied to this study,combining with the alternative perspective to analyze the research model.Both of them enrich the theory in the study of female appearance.In addition,the paper provides reasonable and effective suggestions for female candidates and recruiters.First of all,female candidates should focus on the impact of professional image on interviewers,obtaining the recognition of the interviewer by the way of makeup.Moreover,female candidates can choose combination of clothing styles and makeup based on preferences and scenes.Finally,interviewers should pay attention to the trait information of candidates,and should also take methods(provisions of uniform,etc.)to avoid cognitive bias’ s impact on recruitment results.
