On December 16,2013,a magnitude 5.1 earthquake, the largest earthquake recorded since impoundment, occurred in Badong County. The Three Gorges reservoir is an important energy base, occupies an important place in the national economy. It has important practical significance to research the Badong earthquake. This paper contains four parts of work, mainly as follow:1.Collected the information of regional geological survey, active faults, geophysical and the phases of Badong Ms5.1earthquake,distribution of stations in the study area.2.In base of existing seismic and geologic data,we deeply investigated the tectonic geologic feature, topography and geomorphology, quaternary geology and historical earthquake in the region. And drew the integral geological map(1:25000)of the study area.3.Precise earthquake relocation shows that the earthquake sequence are distributed along NEE direction.Using P arrivals and S arrivals observed by the Three Gorges seismic network,we verify the accuracy of the relocated events by calculating the geometric relationship between epicentral distance with focal distance and focal depth. Thus great improvement of the accuracy of hypocenter location has been made in the east, north, and vertical direction.4.Using the measured geological sections and seismic analysis methods,we discussed the formation mechanism of the Badong Ms5.1 earthquake.
