The phenomenon of negative refraction is a kind of phenomenon of abnormal refraction.New materials with more exotic properties can be fabricated by using the properties of negative refraction. The conventional negative refraction materials after the preparation cannot be tuned because of their fixed electromagnetic characteristics.Plasma photonic crystal is a kind of micro-nano material which can be controlled tenably. It has not only the band characteristics of photonic crystal but also the tunable characteristic of plasma, which has great potential application. In this paper,we studied the phenomenon of negative refraction and the modulating effect of the external magnetic field on the properties of negative refraction based on the one-dimensional plasma photonic crystals. The main work is as follows:(1)We discussed the mechanism of negative refraction at a lossy plasma layer interface and derived the refraction angle of oblique incident electromagnetic waves in plasma layer. The results show that only transverse magnetic(TM)waves can lead to negative refraction in plasmas, while the transverse electronic(TE)waves cannot. Moreover, the plasma frequency and the collision frequency of plasma have a significant effect on the negative refraction.(2)We investigated the negative refraction in one-dimensional plasma photonic crystals. The results show: when the frequency of the incident electromagnetic waves is higher than the plasma frequency, negative refraction appears at the edge of the band gap due to the strong dispersion;when the frequency of the incident electromagnetic waves is lower than the plasma frequency, negative refraction appears not only at the edge of the band gap,but also at the frequency regions that do not belong to any edge of the band gap. However, when the frequency of the incident wave is below the plasma frequency, negative refraction at these regions requires proper angle of incidence and plasma filling factor and low collision frequency of plasma.(3)We further studied the negative refraction in one-dimensional magnetized plasma photonic crystals. We discussed the Faraday and the Voigt effect on the properties of negative refraction. The results show that the magnitude and direction of the applied external magnetic field have a significant effect on negative refraction in plasma photonic crystals. For the Faraday effect, when the incidence is right-handed circular polarization, the frequency regions of negative refraction shift right with smaller peak value as the external magnetic amplitude increases; While the incidence is left-handed circular polarization, the frequency regions of negative refraction shift left with larger peak value as the external magnetic amplitude increases. For the Voigt effect, the frequency regions of negative refraction shift left with the external magnetic amplitude increases, but the modulating effect on the peak value is not obvious.
